Infertility Counseling and Treatment

The initial evaluation for infertility involves a complete history and physical exam and some basic laboratory testing. It is important to document early on whether or not ovulation is occurring. This is accomplished with either a basal body temperature chart or one of the over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits. It is also important to evaluate the male partner by obtaining a semen analysis.

If it appears that the patient is ovulating and the sperm count is adequate, then we will concentrate on other possible causes, such as blocked fallopian tubes or endometriosis. To eliminate these potential causes, other more invasive tests are often needed, such as laparoscopy or an x-ray dye test of the fallopian tubes called a hysterosalpingogram.

Dr. Lovin and Teri Duffy, RNC, GONP. are each trained to treat infertility, but if more specialized treatments become necessary, such as tubal reconstructive surgery, invitro fertilization, artificial insemination, or the use of fertility injections such as pergonal, you will be referred to a reproductive specialist.
