Book Review

Our patient library has been a tremendous success, confirming my feeling that women are hungry for information regarding their health. I have not personally read each book from cover to cover, so I cannot fully endorse each book in our library. Still, I tend to purchase books that I feel are of interest to women and I do at least preview each. If I strongly disagree with its contents, I will not place that book in the library. We also have books donated by our patients, and I cannot guarantee that these books contain only accurate, unbiased information.

Book Review

Order this book now!In the last several issues of our newsletters, I have written reviews of books which we have in our library. All of these reviews have been very positive and I will continue only to review books which I think are helpful and that I highly recommend This review is no different. After reading The Osteoporosis Solution by Carl Germano, RD, CNS, LON and William Cabot, MD, I feel compelled to recommend it to all of my patients, not just menopausal women.

As we all know, osteoporosis is a devastating condition which affects millions of women in this country. But do you know how preventable this epidemic is? Just as the majority of people can prevent heart disease by eating a proper diet, exercising, and taking certain supplements, the same is true for osteoporosis.

Mr. Germano and Dr. Cabot explain in their book detailed information on preventing osteoporosis, diagnosing it, and the latest treatments to help reverse the bone loss. There is an entire chapter on ipriflavone, a new and very exciting supplement. Ipriflavone is a derivative of isoflavone which are phytoestrogens found in soy.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that ipriflavone and calcium, improved bone density in postmenopausal women significantly more than calcium alone or placebo. The authors present numerous other studies which support this finding.

Other chapters go into detailed descriptions of the recommended supplements to take for preserving bone density and for overall bone health.

I found this book to be very informative and well written and does a great job of explaining exactly what is causing the bone tissue to lose calcium and therefore bone mass as we age. The book also explains how calcium and other minerals and supplements exert their effect on the bone. As I said before, I strongly recommend this book for all women, regardless of age, if you have an interest in preventing or treating this very common condition.

You may order this book right now by visiting our online bookstore. It is located in the General Health Section.

A Woman's View is a great believer in the World Wide Web as a source of current information, so we have a computer in our Media Center that is connected to the Internet so our patients can look up health topics of interest at no cost.  Currently, there is no scheduled time, but there is a possibility that another patient will be using the computer if you do not call ahead.  Also, we use that computer for a program called PACE that helps us provide pre-operative information to our surgery patients.  Still, the computer is available more often than not, so if you need internet access to look up your health questions, let us know.

We also have several health and fitness videos that can be checked out or viewed in our Media Center.
